Nietzsche Meets The Family Circus

My husband shared a link to this website on Facebook today. You hit "refresh" and a random Family Circus cartoon gets paired with a random quote from philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Now, I'm no fan of Nietzsche and I no fan of Family Circus. But to pair the ultimate negativity of Nietzsche with the sickening optimism of Family Circus somehow makes for fairly decent entertainment. One of the pairings that came up for me when I refreshed the site today was this:


What a fine and unintentional commentary on our society. Our "art" in the form of mindless entertainment. Our "truth" that yes, indeed, people need to work (BTW, work was part of Creation, not the Fall so it was part of God's plan for us from the beginning). The irony being, of course, that as we perform the "truth" we maintain our lives and take care of the things and people God has entrusted to us, and as we take in the "art" our brains get duller, our bodies get fatter, and we seem to invite death as the next logical step to our voluntary immobility.

Sometimes the mindless entertainment of the Internet produces a gem.
