Life's Little Surprises

Ah, the surprises that each day brings! We are going along in life at a certain pace with ideas and goals and desires, and then all of a sudden . . .

. . . life pokes you and gives you something to think about. For instance, I have plans to try to work through my fabric stash while sewing this spring and summer. Then on Sunday a woman in church brought in massive amounts of fabric for my friend Valerie and I to look through and take for free. Who can turn down good yardage, especially in shades of blue?

Dear me.

Another example. By late April we Michiganders have started to let down our guard vis-à-vis snowfall. We did already have a snow in April, after all, and while we know that we're due one, we don't really think about having another two weeks later. But then you wake up and raise the shades and . . .

. . . your flowers are huddled under a white blanket.

Ah, well. By the end of the day, most of the snow will have melted. Already it's gone from the lawn and most of the garden. It's essentially fluffy rain, right?

And just a couple days ago I was wishing there was a thrift store closer to home so it would be easier to drop off my donations (which ride around in our cars for weeks on end because we never pass by a thrift store in our everyday travels). Then today there was a flyer in the door announcing the opening of a new thrift shop just a few blocks away. Perfect.

Life has been surprising me a lot lately, in mostly quite pleasant ways.

Free Fabric - Happy Day!

I LOVE Helleborus! That's going on my list for this year!

My Mom was a Michigander before marrying my Dad and moving to Maine : )

New thrift store convenience : )

And did you stick that needle in your finger on purpose?!

I most certainly did no. I took that picture awhile ago after using my finger as a pin cushion, knowing that at some point it would be appropriate for a blog post. :)

How wonderful to get all tha free fabric!! :)

I LOVE those pictures of the snow on the flowers! I have a question (ignorant I know, but forgive me for coming from a no-snow climate!)... Does the snow kill the flowers when you get late snow like that??

Erin  – (April 18, 2011 at 10:54 PM)

The flowers that bloom in April are bulbs or perennials that are adapted to this climate and while the snow may occasionally squash them a bit, it doesn't kill them. If someone had foolishly planted annuals when we had some warm days in March, then the snow would kill them.

what beautifull flowers, they seem to look extra special in a blanket of snow. Your photos are really good too.
So lucky on the fabric front!!

Thrift Update: I just stopped in to see the store ad spent $14.77 for a like-new picnic basket, 4 shirts, 1 pair of pants, and 7 books. CHEAP! And all the proceeds stay in my town to help local people in need. Awesome. Books were 10 for $1 and they switch them out each night and put new ones out. I can hardly believe it.
